Rules Review / Study

Our Rules Review Section is designed to allow subscribers to self-study the rules of their particular sport by reviewing a variety of questions (game situations) online. Using a quiz format, the subscriber supplies answers to “game situation” questions and receives immediate feedback as to the correctness of their answers, including a brief explanation of the rule and the actual rule number from official rule books.

Below are a couple of examples of our Interactive Rules Review questions.

Test yourself. (notice the immediate feedback) :

1. The home team supplies 3 softballs for the game, two of which displayed the NFHS Authentication mark. However, the third ball did not have the mark. The umpire should

1) Use all three balls, but only use the ball missing the Authentication Mark if the other two were fouled out of play.
2) Use all three balls, as the NFHS Authentication Mark is not a requirement this year.
3) Ask the visiting team coach if it would be acceptable to him if they use all three balls.
4) Use only the two balls displaying the NFHS Authentication Mark and remove the other ball.
The Answer is #4 - Use only the two balls displaying the NFHS Authentication Mark and remove the other ball, playing with only two balls. The NFHS Authentication Mark is required on all softballs used in NFHS games. (NFHS Rule 1.3.8)

2. F6 on defense wears a face guard/protector while in the field. While playing defense during the second inning, a ball is hit to the outfield and, not needing the face guard, tosses it to the ground. While running the bases, B1 is forced to avoid the face guard, which is lying in the base path. The umpire(s) should

1) Signal ''dead ball'' and award B1 an additional base, as this would be obstruction.
2) Allow the play to continue and, after the play has ended, warn both F6 and the coach.
3) Give the ''delayed dead ball'' signal and award the bases B1 would have reached had there not been obstruction.
4) Allow them to play on, as this is NOT obstruction, since B1 did not make contact with the face guard.
The Answer is #3 - Give the ''delayed dead ball'' signal and award the bases B1 would have reached had there not been obstruction. (NFHS Rule 1.8.4)
